At Edmonston Road and Sunnyside in Beltsville

Crepuscular Crap Canter, followed by optional Midsummer Mothing Muster

Two Parts: 1) evening walk, and 2) OPTIONAL chat+mothing in a second location that will most likely also have various crickets = cicadas, katydids and may be cake.
Part 1: Walk along a gravel road into BARC to look for coyote scats – and other things. Meet at the gravel parking lot just north of the Sunnyside/Edmonston Rd. intersection, on the east side of Edmonston Rd. We plan to take half an hour to walk a mile out along a dirt road between the fields, then half an hour to walk back.
No guarantee that we’ll see coyote scats, but they’ve been found along this road before.
We will secure the appropriate permit to access this restricted area in BARC.
Part 2 : After the walk (so probably around 8:15 or 8:30 pm) we will follow with an informal MMM gathering (Midsummer Mothing Muster), in the green space behind 8 Laurel Hill Rd. (enter on the left of 62 Ridge Rd.)
Also optional: please bring a chair if you want to sit, and you are welcome to bring a beverage and/or snack if you wish, but that is not required.
We will setup a mothing sheet. i.e., hang a white cloth between 2 trees and shine black lights on it to attract and observe moths. We will also listen to crickets and other talkative insects.
We will ask that everyone remains fairly quiet, so that we do not bother the neighbors (people, moths, owls, foxes, bats, rabbits etc.)

Opening “Free-doms” art exhibition – 5 pm – FREE. There is a significant time period in America that is little known—in Prince George’s County history specifically—when enslaved Africans sued their captors for their freedom. Some gained freedom for themselves and their families while others did not.

Free-doms (frē′dəms) the condition to be and act without control or interference by another or by circumstance—broaches the subject of freedom for all and its meaning for the individual and the collective. The works in this exhibition are thoughtful and emotionally evocative. Free-doms defines and questions American free-doms both historically and as it’s being re-defined in contemporary times. By using sourced material from Maryland State Archives, artists Dwayne Martin, Selena Noir, Khadija Jahmila, and Underdog the DJ have researched, re-imagined, and based these original works on the historical lawsuits known as Freedom Stories. The art exhibition runs from September 9-November 4, 2023.
