Friday, September 10

“Ailey” opens. 5 p.m. Alvin Ailey was a trailblazing pioneer who found salvation through dance. Ailey traces the full contours of this brilliant and enigmatic man whose search for the truth in movement resulted in enduring choreography that centers on the Black American experience with grace, strength, and unparalleled beauty. Told through Ailey’s own words and featuring evocative archival footage and interviews with those who intimately knew him, director Jamila Wignot weaves together a resonant biography of an elusive visionary. “Aretha” opens. 7:30 p.m. Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a young child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, Respect is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice and become the Queen of Soul. Starring Jennifer Hudson, Respect provides an expansive and dynamic portrait of Aretha Franklin as a young woman, overcoming lifelong demons to find her true sound. Buy tickets here.
