*Here are the special events, movies, live music, theater, talks, etc coming up in the next 10 days – in Greenbelt Maryland, plus choice events in nearby College Park, Hyattsville, Mount Rainier, Bowie, Laurel and Riverdale. All Prince George’s Proud!

New – Vaccination Requirement! In the interest of public health, OGT now requires the following prior to admission:  Proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR negative PCR test (within 48 hours)  AND matching photo ID. Please plan ahead to have this information available. Digital images accepted.

Food Truck and Fresh Air.  Beer garden style, family-friendly community event with food and drinks available for purchase. Each beer garden style event will raise money for important local and national American Legion programs. In the event of rain, dining will be moved inside. Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks will be for sale. Designated picnic table seating in the rear parking lot along with play area for kids. About the event.

At Greenbelt’s Firefly Sanctuary

Firefly Sanctuary Volunteer Day, 10 am – 1 pm. In recognition of National Public Lands Day, join the City of Greenbelt Department of Public Works for this conservation stewardship event.. Volunteers are needed to remove invasive plant species and install native plants along the forest edge of the Firefly Sanctuary. Volunteers must register in order to participate. To Register: Contact Kevin Carpenter-Driscoll at kdriscoll@greenbeltmd.gov

Free Brazilian Percussion Workshop 3-5 pm. Learn the basics of Brazilian percussion and samba dance—no experience required!

“This fall, we continue our popular Brazilian percussion workshops with André Coelho from Rio de Janeiro, with a focus on the ijexá rhythm. We are also adding Brazilian dance workshops! The dance workshops will take place right before the percussion jams, starting at 2PM. Our upcoming dance workshops will be taught by samba instructors Katie Kirkpatrick and Andressa Telles“. Brooklyn Rider – Healing Modes – in Person (click here for online). 3 pm. Pay what you can. From the ancient Greeks to modern American neuroscientists, people have long recognized the healing properties of music. In string quartet Brooklyn Rider’s stirring program Healing Modes, we hear a profound exploration of the power of music to help society recover from tumult and suffering. The program features gripping works by trailblazing living composers Caroline Shaw, Gabriela Lena Frank, Du Yun, Matana Roberts and Reena Esmail along with Ludwig van Beethoven’s fifteenth string quartet—all creating a sonoric testament to resilience and deliverance.

Outdoors At Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mt. Rainier

Uasuf Gueye & Urban Virtuosos 7 – 8:30 pm.Tickets $10-20.

Uasuf Gueye & Urban Virtuosos consist of six musicians who are all accomplished in their own right. Driven by traditional instruments from the 13th century Manding empire such as the Balafon and the Ngoni, the Urban Virtuosos band plays captivating arrangements that combine funky drum set patterns, soothing horn lines, soulful jazz vocals, and thought-stimulating hip-hop lyrics. Guilford Woods, a 15 acre remnant woods in College Park, is a precious and endangered natural area. Please join us for a guided walk and creative writing experience. Using the five senses, and reaching deep into memory and cultural resonance, we will walk, contemplate, think, and write. Sharing your work is optional but encouraged. Bring a snack, thermos, blanket or chair, and your writing materials to this FREE workshop, co-sponsored by College Park Arts Exchange and Save Guilford Woods. Meet up at 7591 Mowatt Lane Parking Garage (FEE!).
