Exotic melodies. Driving rhythms. Compelling dancers. The Fez Tones are all this and more.
The DMV’s foremost traditional Middle Eastern band, The Fez Tones comprise ethereal melody instruments such as qanun, ney and oud, coupled with driving hand percussion on the darbuka. riqq and tar. They perform folk, classical and pop music from across the Arab world and Turkey, weaving an enchanting spell that lifts listeners off their feet.
Home base for the band is Greenbelt’s New Deal Cafe, where The Fez Tones host a monthly hafla, the Arabic term for ‘dance party.’ The first set of their show features performances from the best bellydancers of the Mid-Atlantic region, and the second set is open to dancers of all skill levels and ages. Shows are held the third Sunday of each month, from 6pm to 8pm (reservations are recommended as shows often sell out).
The Fez Tones have also performed at a variety of other venues in the DMV, including the Washington Folk Festival and the D.C. Turkish Festival, bellydance performances at American University and the Baltimore Aquarium, and galas at embassies and governmental agencies.
Wherever they play, the band creates a unique form of musical magic. Please contact us if you’d like us to host a one-of-a-kind hafla for your venue or organization!
Two members of The Fez Tones are Greenbelt residents and have been profiled on Greenbelt Online – check it out.
