UPDATE: The New Chicago Dance Studio is now closed.
I had been looking for another exercise modality and found a dance class on Saturday mornings at New Chicago Dance Studio in Greenbelt. Having taken dance in high school, I was thrilled to find an adult dance class so close to home. It’s called “Goddess” and it combines Latin, African, middle eastern movement in the structure of a jazz dance class. It’s gentle on the joints (the dance floor is professional top grade), it’s a great workout and it’s FUN! Different props like fans and scarves are used and new choreography is taught every few weeks. Participants wear loose and comfortable clothing (no need for leotards here!), bare feet, and coin skirt (it really jingles when you move those hips!). (Coin skirts can be purchased at the studio.) This class is designed for women of all skill levels. Many of the women have been taking the class for years. There is great comradery and support among the group and they were very welcoming to me.
Some classes are taught by Samantha Fitschen, instructor and Studio owner. Samantha is very professional and personable. She has a warm and welcoming disposition. She clearly enjoys her job: her face just lights up when she’s teaching. And her smile is infectious.
Classes begin with a warm up, core conditioning and stretching. Then, the dance is taught. As I learn the sequence of steps while keeping my balance and smiling at an imaginary audience, my entire body is engaged. When the hour long class is over, I feel limber, strong and happy.
Students are also given the chance to perform. The next adult recital (concert) is Saturday, January 3, 2015 in College Park. More information can be found at www.newchicagodancestudio.com. I’m excited to be part of this show’s line up!
