Meet Greenbelt artist Barb Stevens, whose works are on display through June at the Greenbelt Arts Center. (Check their website for event times when the Center will be open.) In her words:
My art draws attention to the many things we see every day, yet sometimes take for granted. I try to help people appreciate the beauty in everyday occurrences and things—baby birds being fed by their mother, pots and pans hanging overhead in the kitchen, ladder back chairs in the dining room. My style is impressionistic and done rather quickly with emotion. I like to mix the paint on the canvas. It results in more excitement to the viewer’s eye. I paint with acrylic and watercolors.
Barb grew up in Greenbelt and returned in 2019 after decades in Virginia, where she and her late partner lived and performed traditional music. Since moving back home, she’s found a new musical partner, and they perform as Mike and Barb. You can hear them at the Greenbelt, Laurel and Savage Farmers Markets this summer. Barb also performs as “Just Barb” most Tuesdays at New Deal Cafe’s open mic events.
But that’s not all! Barb also serves on Greenbelt’s Arts Advisory Board and participates in monthly Art Shares at Community Center.
